VGM Procedure

CMA CGM Message to UK Customers

What is the VGM – Verified Gross Mass

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has amended the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) mandating the declaration of the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) of a packed container before loading on board vessels. VGM is a certified weight as obtained by one of the two methods (see below) and which represents the total gross mass of a packed container. The VGM must be sent by the customer before the VGM cut off. NOTE: Break Bulk, RoRo and Empties are out of the scope. Customer Calculation method

2 methods to calculate the VGM:

Method 1: Weighing the packed container using calibrated and certified weighing equipment (e.g. weigh bridges, load cell sensing technologies etc)

Method 2: Weighing all packages and cargo items, including the mass of pallets, dunnage and other securing material to be packed in the container and adding the tare mass of the container to the sum of the single masses, using a certified method approved by the competent Authority of the country where the container is packed.

When will the VGM rules be implemented

The regulation stipulates that all units shipped on board on or after the 1st July 2016 require a VGM and that no unit can be loaded without one.

Please make sure that you have registered for the CMA CGM web portal straight away to be ready for your first VGM.

Deadlines for sending your VGM instructions

To avoid additional weighing charges from the port, please can you submit your VGM to CMA CGM UK prior to the containers arrival at the port. The deadline for CMA CGM to receive the VGM will be 1 working day prior to the arrival of the vessel. A container cannot be loaded onto a vessel without a VGM and if a VGM is not received by the deadline the unit will be moved to the following vessel. All costs will be for the shipper’s account. We will alert the customer of units where VGM have not been supplied ahead of the deadline.

Admin Fees and costs

There will be no additional administration fees from CMA CGM UK for receiving your VGM via our Web-Portal or EDI (INTTRA or GT NEXUS). In the cases where the VGM is provided for manual update using our template CMA CGM will make a charge of £25.

This charge will be suspended for July and come into effect from the 1st August 2016.

If you are unable to obtain your own VGM, all of the UK ports where CMA CGM have services can support you with weighing facilities. If this is of interest, you will be required to arrange directly with the port.
