CMA CGM, a worldwide leading shipping group, operates a fleet of over 3,500,000 TEUs. Almost anything is liable to be found in our containers. Whether the goods are loaded in bulk, bags, or cartons in standard containers, out of gauge goods and project cargo on flat racks, fruit, meat, fish and other goods requiring control in reefer containers, CMA CGM always has the answer to meet the needs of our customers.

A wide offer

In addition to conventional containers (standards, reefers, platform, open top...), CMA CGM also offers specialized containers adapted to specific goods:

Autotainers for the transportation of vehicles and GOH for the transport of garments on hangers.

Our containers are fully multi-modal and easily transition between ship, rail, barge and truck.

All of our containers meet ISO standards 1496 and 6346 as well as C.S.C. criteria (Convention for Safe Containers). Containers are monitored and maintained by our expert teams around the globe who ensure that the units remain in accordance with those standards, as well as to the requirements of CMA CGM to ensure a constant level of quality and customer satisfaction.

A freight container, totally enclosed and weatherproof, with a rigid roof, rigid side walls, and floor, having at least one of its end walls equiped with doors and intended to be suitable for the transport of cargo of the greatest possible variety.
This is by far the most common type of container. It is suitable for the carriage of most types of “Dry” goods, including those packed in boxes, cartons, cases, bags, bales, pallets, drums etc...
With some adjustments and adequate loading/unloading equipment, this type of container may also be used for certain types of bulk cargo.

Thermal container equipped with an electrical appliance (mechanical compressor) for the purposes of cooling or heating the air within the container.
CMA CGM owns one of the largest and youngest fleets of Reefer containers designed for the transport of perishable goods in a temperature-controlled environment. (from -35°C to +35°C). The CMA CGM Reefer fleet consists of 20’, 40’High Cube and 45’32/33 Pallet Wide containers.

Freight container similar in all respects to a general purpose container except that it has no rigid roof but may have a flexible and movable or removable cover. Such containers may have movable or removable top end transverse members above their end doors.
These containers are primarily used to carry heavy and/or bulky finished products, which handling and loading can only be performed with a crane or a rolling bridge. Tiltable half-height open top containers are specially designed to carry bulk minerals.
The CMA CGM 8’6’’ high open top containers are equipped with:

  • Removable roof bows and tarpaulin
  • Hinged doors (on both sides) and/or removable header above doors

Compared to fixed-end type, collapsible flatracks have end walls that fold. The flushfolding collapsible flatrack, the most sophisticated of its types has end walls which fold flush with the base.
Flatracks are dedicated for the carriage of heavy, bulky as well as over height and/ or over width items.
They also permit the stacking of several empty containers into one 'bundle' for empty repositionning. Their base is often designed to transport heavy material. Some flats are 45T tested. The flatracks with collapsible ends also permit the transportation of over length cargo.

40'-45' Pallet Wide units were specifically designed with the 1.2 m Euro pallet in mind. The equipment, with its 2.45 m internal width, ensures optimum utilization of space. Shippers benefit by being able to load 5 additional 1.2mx0.8m euro pallets than in a standard ISO 45 ft container (or additional 1.2x1m pallets).
Total per tier =33 euro pallets in a pallet wide i.o. 27 euro pallets in a standard ISO 45ft containers (or 24 x "1.2x1m" i/o 21)
These containers are in compliance with the UE regulations.
Financially speaking, this additional capacity can reduce through distribution costs by 15% on more. Such optimal utilization, with the avoidance of broken stows, prevents cargo movement. This may remove the need for the securing of cargo and so improves dispatch times whilst also reducing the cost of product packaging.

Containers and the Environment

20 years after the first Rio Earth Summit, the environmental involvement of companies in particular transport companies is essential. CMA CGM offers a true environmental approach with its fleet of vessels.

We have applied that same focus on our container fleet! Already pioneers in many areas, our new container offerings are clearly directed towards the eco-container.

Innovative Areas

Bamboo Floors

Traditionally container floors are made of wood sourced from endangered primary forests. To help protect these resources, CMA CGM now uses bamboo floors for all new container orders. Better than a tree, bamboo grows as quickly as grass and can be cut after 4 to 7 years compared to 60 years for traditional tropical wood. The CMA CGM bamboo container fleet will exceed more than 180,000 TEU by the end 2013.


Light steel

In September 2008, the group began a new era with the introduction the first ‘Light Steel’ containers into its fleet. This new generation of containers is made from high tensile steel, saving 550 kg tare per High-Cube while retaining the structural qualities of the container.

On a ship of 10,000 TEU, the use of these containers can save 1-2 tonnes of fuel per day, which represents 3 -6 tonnes less of CO2 emissions.


Solvent free paint

Traditional paint solvents generate volatile organic compounds (C.O.V.) which have a negative carbon footprint and a significant impact on air pollution. CMA CGM was one of the first to integrate containers using solvent free paints into its fleet

Low consumption reefers

In the reefer sector (requiring energy and refrigerant gases), the group uses the latest technological developments in order to benefit from the most environmentally friendly solutions in terms of energy consumption and the release of CO2. In 2009, the Group invested in low consumption refrigerated containers. These containers, of which a further 2,000 will be delivered in January, helps reduce electricity and therefore fuel consumption by 3X, saving tens of tons of fuel per voyage.
